Download PhotoCraft: official links and builds

PhotoCraft is free and open source, and every build is published by the project itself. This page shows the official download routes, what each file is, how to check what you downloaded, and what to expect from an alpha release.

What the official PhotoCraft page offers

When this wiki read the page on a Mac, its main download button was “Download Launcher”, which leads to the ArtCraft Launcher, a small native app that installs the right build of each Craft app for your system, shows which version you have, and tells you when an update is out. Below it, an “Other platforms and downloads” section lists standalone installers for Windows, macOS, Linux and FreeBSD, the command-line tool, the web build and the checksum file.getartcraft.comLauncher README

The standalone list is the same set of files that GitHub Releases carries, so pick whichever route you trust more.

Which PhotoCraft file do I need?

PlatformArchitectureFilesNotes
Windowsx64, arm64, x86
  • photocraft-<ver>-windows-x64.msi
  • photocraft-<ver>-windows-x64-portable.zip
  • photocraft-<ver>-windows-arm64.msi
  • photocraft-<ver>-windows-arm64-portable.zip
  • photocraft-<ver>-windows-x86.msi
  • photocraft-<ver>-windows-x86-portable.zip
MSI installer or portable zip. README: installers and executables are code-signed. Step-by-step guide.
macOSUniversal (Apple silicon + Intel)
  • photocraft-<ver>-macos-universal.dmg
  • photocraft-cli-<ver>-macos-universal.zip
The app (DMG) and the command-line tool are signed and notarized.
Linuxx86_64, aarch64
  • photocraft-<ver>-linux-<arch>.AppImage
  • photocraft-<ver>-linux-<arch>.flatpak
  • photocraft-<ver>-linux-<arch>.deb
  • photocraft-<ver>-linux-<arch>.rpm
  • photocraft-<ver>-linux-<arch>.tar.gz
Replace <arch> with x86_64 or aarch64. The AppImage needs no install.
FreeBSDx86_64 (FreeBSD 14)
  • photocraft-<ver>-freebsd-x86_64.tar.gz
Tarball laid out like /usr/local; install the runtime libraries first.
WebWebAssembly
  • photocraft-web-<ver>.zip
A static site for a modern browser; you host it yourself.

<ver> is the version number. File names follow the README and match the v0.6.0 release assets checked on 2026-10-10.

Windows has its own step-by-step guide. On macOS there is one universal DMG for Apple silicon and Intel, which the README says is signed and notarized. README

Linux notes

  • The AppImage needs no install. On first run it registers a launcher icon and menu entry in~/.local/share; set PHOTOCRAFT_NO_DESKTOP_INTEGRATION=1 to skip that.
  • The Flatpak bundle needs the freedesktop runtime from Flathub, which flatpak offers to install with it:
flatpak install --user photocraft-<version>-linux-x86_64.flatpak # or -linux-aarch64
flatpak run ai.storyteller.photocraft

README

FreeBSD notes

On FreeBSD 14 (x86_64), install the runtime libraries, then unpack the tarball into /usr/local:

pkg install libxkbcommon wayland libX11 libXcursor libXrandr libXi libxcb mesa-libs vulkan-loader gtk3 fontconfig freetype2 alsa-lib
tar -xzf photocraft-<ver>-freebsd-x86_64.tar.gz --strip-components 1 -C /usr/local

What is the newest PhotoCraft version?

When this wiki was checked on 2026-10-10, the newest GitHub release was v0.6.0, published that day. The getartcraft.com list still linked v0.5.0 standalone builds at that moment. PhotoCraft ships very often, so for the newest build use the latest GitHub release, and for the simplest install use the Launcher or the getartcraft.com page. Releasesgetartcraft.com

How do I verify a PhotoCraft download?

  • Each release includes SHA256SUMS.txt, which lists a checksum for every file. README
  • Compute the hash of your file and compare it with that file’s line. On macOS run shasum -a 256 <file>; on Linux run sha256sum <file>; on Windows see the Windows guide.
  • The README says the Windows installers and executables are code-signed and the macOS app and command-line tool are signed and notarized. The project’s installation page adds a caution: signing depends on the release secrets configured, and the existence of an artifact alone is not proof that it was signed. Check the signature yourself.READMEInstall doc

Desktop app, web build and command line

  • Desktop app. A native app that works offline, with a GPU compositor built on wgpu (Metal, Vulkan, DX12 and WebGPU). README
  • Web build. The whole engine and UI compile to WebAssembly. The release ships it asphotocraft-web-<ver>.zip, a static site you can host on any static server, and the README linksDocker hosting instructions.README
  • Command line. photocraft-cli runs commands headlessly, batches actions over a folder and serves MCP for AI agents; on macOS it ships as photocraft-cli-<ver>-macos-universal.zip.README

Is PhotoCraft stable? What to expect from an alpha

  • Rough edges. The README says to expect them and asks for bug reports with your OS, document size, layer count and a screenshot. README
  • Linux on Wayland. Dropping files onto the window does not open them yet because the windowing library has no Wayland drag and drop. Use File › Open, paste an image with Ctrl+V, or start PhotoCraft under XWayland withWAYLAND_DISPLAY= photocraft. README
  • Memory. One reviewer saw RAM climb to about 5 GB a few minutes after opening a PSD on a weak laptop. That is one observation on one machine. OMG! Ubuntu
  • Untrusted files. The project’s installation page says to treat PSD, PSB, .pcraft, images, profiles, LUTs and patterns as potentially malicious, and to read its secure-file-handling notes before opening unknown files in sensitive environments. Install doc
  • Not identical to Photoshop. Matching menus and shortcuts do not guarantee identical output. See thecomparison.

Third-party packages

OMG! Ubuntu reported that an unofficial PhotoCraft snap appeared on the Snap Store. It does not come from the project and this wiki has not reviewed it, so prefer the official routes above. OMG! Ubuntu

PhotoCraft downloads: quick answers

Where is the official PhotoCraft download?

The PhotoCraft page on getartcraft.com, which the README calls the easiest way to install, and the GitHub Releases page of the storytold/photocraft repository. Both carry the same builds for Windows, macOS, Linux and FreeBSD, plus a checksum file.

Is getartcraft.com/download the PhotoCraft installer?

No. That page is for the ArtCraft app, the AI image and video studio. It lists Windows 10 (64-bit) or newer and macOS 12 or newer and includes creating a free account. PhotoCraft’s own page is getartcraft.com/apps/photocraft.

How can I tell a PhotoCraft download is genuine?

Get the installer and SHA256SUMS.txt from an official page, compute the file’s SHA256 hash and compare it with the listed one. The README says Windows builds are code-signed and macOS builds are signed and notarized, but the project’s installation page says to verify the signature yourself.

Can PhotoCraft run in a web browser?

The whole engine and interface compile to WebAssembly, and each release includes a web build as a zip. It is a static site that you host yourself; the README links Docker hosting instructions.
